Humana One sent out a blast email to the agent community a few days ago indicating that effective next week, August 1, 2012 that contraceptive methods will be covered as an essential benefits on Texas Health Insurance plans. Essential benefits for this post means covered at 100% no copay or deductible, meaning FREE! It goes on to state the date is tied to the beginning of your plan year after 08-01-2012 so we assume that if you purchase a policy effective after the first of August it’s covered and if your policy renews in say December that is when yours would kick in but who knows what they are thinking.
Now, whats covered? Well for starters birth control pills are in there but if you go to the federal government website for health care you find some other things that may cause concern. Here is the exact passage from the feds. website:
- Contraception and contraceptive counseling: Women will have access to all Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures, and patient education and counseling. These recommendations do not include abortifacient drugs. Most workers in employer-sponsored plans are currently covered for contraceptives. Family planning services are an essential preventive service for women and critical to appropriately spacing and ensuring intended pregnancies, which results in improved maternal health and better birth outcomes.
Look at the procedure I bolded, sterilization procedures. Does that seem odd? Does to me. I don’t recall the media discussing this procedure nor do I recall hearing or reading anywhere about this one. I know I wrote an article somewhere about this because I found it buried in some government document called the Affordable Care Act but still, no media attention. Maybe it’s just me making a big deal out of this and no one cares but I still feel it’s worth discussing, lets discuss.
Sterilization procedures in English means tubes tied, period. Now here is the thing to think about. Essensial preventive benefits are free benefits according to the health care law, things like normal OBGYN visits and flu shots are covered free of charge with the new law and the tubes tied procedure is now part of that section of benefits. I recall looking up the cost of a tubal ligation on the Planned Parenthood website as about $6000. Wow, six grand covered at no copay or deductible, SWEET! What do you think rates are going to do? Well, after almost 20 years in this industry I know.. up up and away.
As always I will continuing to keep you informed on matters related to you medical insurance plans, some you may like and others I’m sure you will be just as disturbed as I am.
Co-pay health insurance plans have been the normal route that most people have chosen over the past few decades (or more) when selecting health insurance. However, the tide is turning. Why are co pay plans no longer the most popular health insurance plan in Texas? Well, there are several reasons for this phenomenon. The emergence of the Health Savings Account (HSA) in 2003 made a splash that sent out ripples are growing in strength today rather than diminishing. More and more Texans are choosing to use health savings accounts in conjunction with catastrophic health plans for a less expensive way to fund their health care.
In addition to being less expensive, the combination of the HSA and a catastrophic health care plan is also smart because it holds advantages in taxation and because it allows more freedom and choice for the patient. In thinking about the question “Why are co pay plans no longer the most popular health insurance plan in Texas?” you have to consider what lead to this elemental shift in the perception of medical insurance. The primary catalyst for this change is the state of the economy, although education about the benefits of health savings account products by insurance companies to corporations and individual clients hasn’t hurt the movement.
Low Cost Options for Families
With a downturn in the economy, many people found themselves laid off and without health insurance. In searching for affordable health insurance, they realized how expensive individual plans (those not provided as group plans by employers) were to purchase. At the same time, the word was starting to really spread about how health savings accounts work. The HSA is a savings account that is allowed to grow tax free/deferred and can be used to pay for many types of health expenses, including vision and dental care.
Catastrophic health plans are policies that have a high deductible and cover the patient in the event of a catastrophic or major need for medical care, such as hospitalization or surgery. These plans are also called high deductible health plans. By pairing an HSA with a high deductible plan, the patient is able to save for routine medical costs, while being protected against catastrophic medical costs. High deductible health plans like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas have low premiums, so they are much more affordable. Some high deductible plans only cover medical costs that result from catastrophe, and others (with slightly higher premiums) offer complete coverage.
One Simple Yearly Family Out of Pocket
The benefit to the complete coverage is that when the patient meets their deductible with the money from the health savings account, they are covered 100% for any additional medical care, including visits to the doctor. With a health savings account, the patient is more in control of how their health dollars are spent. They can usually choose what physician to see or what hospital to go to. Relatively healthy people will usually find this a much more affordable alternative to traditional co pay health plans. So, why are co pay plans no longer the most popular health insurance plan in Texas? Essentially, it is because Texans have become much more educated consumers when it comes to directing their own medical care and choosing insurance products that fit their needs.

Ok, it’s over. Time to move on and accept the fact that the Affordable Care Act will be fully implemented come the first day of 2014. Lets get past it and look at all the good stuff included in the law. First, I am sick and tired of dealing with folks that no fault of their own have medical conditions that preclude them from getting Texas Health Insurance coverage. That bothers me, always has and always will. I also dislike individuals getting exclusions for some goofy pre-existing condition and the Affordable Care Act cleans that mess up. Goodie.
Yes, I oppose the intrusion into peoples lives just as much as the next Texan but there are allot of great things included in this law, some of those things are in place now. Things like guaranteed issue on kiddos under 19 and the full litany of preventive care benefits that are now first dollar benefits with no co pay or deductible and no cap like we had before the ACA. The benefits of no dollar caps or lifetime maximums is not that big a deal as few ever hit that mark but some carriers were capping prescription drugs at $3000 before the reform bill, now they cant. Again, nice benefits. The creation of a national high risk plan for those that can’t get coverage has helped out in several situations I personally am aware of and i have always supported a national risk pool plan.
In just a few months, January 1st 2014 to be exact, full guaranteed issue starts and yes, premiums will rise, taxes will go up but that’s not my problem as it relates to my job as a Texas Medical Insurance broker. Guaranteed issue is a major deal and will allow good hard working folks to cover their family. I am real tired of explaining to families that the heart attack they incurred has eliminated them from the market place.
Now I know that come very very soon the piper must be paid and yes, this law could bankrupt the country but that’s not my job to deal with, I’m an insurance broker and I deal with the laws and how they relate to health care act affect my clients. The law was passed, elections have consequences and the SCOTUS has spoken therefore I now support my clients and the law as it pertains to my clients.
I conducted some very interesting research this week regarding how Humana Insurance Company applies tobacco ratings to medical plans and thought I would share it with you. First, most medical plans apply about a 25% rate up for smokers or other tobacco users. For the record a tobacco user is anyone who used the product in the last 12 months. But again, 25% is the normal rate up. It seems somewhere in the course of time Humana jacked their rate up to between 30 and 70 percent over preferred rating. That’s large and it’s based on age.
Here are a few examples, someone in their 30’s I determined the additional rating would be 30% on their Enhanced Co Pay Plans over the preferred rate but for a 50 year old the increase goes up to 70% over their best rating. For someone in their forties the increase is about forty percent. This bizarre rating schedule is unlike other companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas or a company like Cigna and I have no idea when or why this radical shift happened.
Having an age banded increase for tobacco users does one thing to Texas health insurance consumers and that is eliminate smokers for purchasing Humana in their older years. Why would you? An example that will make this easier to understand is that BCBS of Texas for a 60 something male was $486 a month but the Humana rate was over $800 a month. They have selectively eliminated a segment of the market that could be a higher risk from ever considering their plans as an option due to elevated cost.
Here is my problem with this practice, if other carriers follow their lead we could see an entire segment of the market shut out from finding affordable medical benefit options. I agree that smoking and tobacco use is detrimental to ones health but this article is not about that, it’s more about a FYI when considering insurance choices and one of those choices has been completely eliminated. I also don’t recall any communication from this company related to the increase in rating structure, even my contact at Humana had no knowledge of this happening.
Bottom line, if you’re looking for choices for the best health insurance in Texas and you have used tobacco in any shape form or fashion in the last year Humana is not playing ball with you. There are other great options that only increase the premium by about 25%, just keep looking.
Securing reliable, dependable health insurance is an important part of protecting your family. With the costs of medical care increasing by leaps and bounds every year, it’s simply not an option to go uninsured. But affording a quality plan that provides the right coverage is difficult, and often not easy to find.
Luckily, catastrophic health insurance is an easy solution for providing the essential coverage you need to keep your family covered medically. Many people are unfamiliar with this type of coverage and unaware that catastrophic health insurance in Texas does more than just cover catastrophes. For families looking for medical coverage that’s solid, dependable and within the budget, catastrophic health insurance may be the right choice.
Catastrophic Insurance is Major Coverage
The name may be deceiving, but catastrophic health insurance is major medical coverage. What does that mean? Simple. You are covered for more than just catastrophes. In fact, in most cases, coverage includes major medical expenses without limitations. In other words, these are not limited benefit plans. There are no limitations on the amount of care that will be paid in the event you need coverage and you are still entitled to receive benefits when you need them. For families, this is an important fact.
Preventive care benefits are covered 100 percent- even before you meet the deductible. So if you need to get testing done or need general care, you’re covered. Catastrophic insurance is simply a cost effective way to get essential coverage while ensuring you’re protected financially in the event of a major medical issue.
Choose Providers Wisely
When considering who to buy your catastrophic health insurance from, make sure to choose wisely. There are tons of insurance companies competing for your hard earned dollars, but only a few who are worthy. Stay with the names you know and trust for ensuring your benefits are delivered on time every time. Companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas or Humana have worked hard to provide Texans health care coverage they can rely on. And there’s a good reason why they remain leading insurance providers- they can be trusted. Don’ take chances with your medical coverage, trust the providers you know will be there for you when you need them.
A Cost-Effective Solution
Catastrophic insurance plans offer increased savings by giving you the opportunity to pay a larger deductible in exchange for a lower monthly premium. This is an important feature or saving money. If you are relatively healthy and visit the doctor infrequently, you can save tons of money in premiums. In addition, when you do visit the doctor, you do not have to pay a copay, which is something most traditional insurance plans require. The out-of-pocket savings alone makes the catastrophic plan a cost effective solution.
Whether you are self-employed, looking for reliable coverage for your family or a healthy individual looking to save a few dollars with affordable coverage, a catastrophic plan is worth a second look. Major medical and preventive care benefits are included and your monthly payment is affordable.
You’re ready to buy health insurance and you’ve decided on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas simply because you know they’re the leaders in health coverage and you’re not willing to take chances with your families health. Smart idea. Now that you’re ready to buy a policy, how do you know which one to choose? With so many different plans, it can get a little confusing. Don’t worry, Blue Cross has the perfect plan for every family and every budget. Just take a few minutes to read through some information and make choosing the perfect plan easier and more convenient.
The very first thing you should do before even reading through the available plans is to decide how much coverage you want for your family and how much you are willing to pay. There are a variety of plans for every answer, so it really depends on your specific goals when it comes to health care. You may want to ask yourself if you need comprehensive coverage which includes all your doctors visits, preventive care and prescription drugs or if you have an older family and are only looking for major medical.
How about your budget? Are you flexible and if so, are you willing to pay a larger deductible for lower monthly payments? If not, how much are you willing to budget towards your health care and are these amounts flexible? Taking some time to create a plan and looking at your budget ahead of time makes choosing the perfect plan faster and less confusing.
Choosing a Plan
If cost is an important issue for you- which it is for most families, there are a few strategies for choosing a plan that will keep medical costs low. Look for plans that make the most sense in terms of how the coverage is provided and the costs associated. For example, it’s probably likely you’ll be visiting the doctor more frequently than someone without children. Consider looking for a plan with low or no doctor visit copays and one that provides coverage for emergency room visits. Preventive care is covered 100 percent with all insurance plans, but make certain your plan includes all wellness checks and important routine visits for your children.
PPO Select Blue Advantage
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas offers PPO Select Blue Advantage, which is an ideal plan for families. With Blue Advantage, all your well visits are covered and that includes out-of-network childhood immunizations up to age 8. So if for some reason you cannot use an in-network provider, you can still get your children the care they need without having to pay extra. In addition, if prescription drug coverage is a concern, with Blue Advantage you get all generic drugs for a low $10 copay. That’s important for families who often need medication to fight ear infections, colds and other issues that are common.
Plus, with access to one of the largest networks in the state, finding a great family doctor or hospital nearby is easy. The BlueChoice network lets you save even more money on premiums simply by using a contracting hospital, doctor or specialist. Deductible amounts and coinsurance maximums are entirely up to you, giving you the flexibility to customize your plan to fit your budget.
For families choosing a quality health insurance plan is a bit confusing. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas offers Blue Advantage, the perfect plan for growing families looking for coverage similar to that provided by an employer. With flexible deductibles and coinsurance amounts, it’s easy to get quality coverage at a price you can afford- ands that’s peace of mind you’re family deserves.

If you have a pre-existing condition, finding and buying quality, health insurance coverage may be difficult. The fact is, most insurance companies don’t want to sell a policy to someone who is already sick. But unfortunately, there are a variety of every day conditions that disqualify folks from buying health insurance. Cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic conditions can restrict people from getting the coverage they deserve.
Guaranteed issue health insurance was designed to give everyone- regardless of health status, the opportunity to receive adequate health insurance coverage.
Guaranteed Issue Defined
When someone speaks of a “guaranteed issue” health plan, they are talking about health care coverage that’s guaranteed, regardless of pre-existing conditions or other health issues. Basically, it’s health insurance coverage with no medical declines. Some states have enacted legislation that mandates all individual health insurance plans are guaranteed issue. But believe it or not, health insurance in Texas is not guaranteed issue-yet. As a result, there are still thousands of Texans who cannot get the care they need because they are denied coverage. Guaranteed issue makes it possible for everyone to get peace of mind that comes from knowing when you need medical attention, you can get it.
Guaranteed Issue Health Insurance in Texas
Unfortunately, most guaranteed issue health insurance plans in the state are limited benefit plans, also called “mini-medical”. With a limited benefit plan, there are several issues to consider. First, most plans pay out a specific dollar amount per year and when the limit is reached, there is no more coverage- at all. This may come in handy if you only need to visit the doctor a few times per year, but with a pre-existing condition, this is usually not the case.
There are other types of guaranteed issue plans, but they have restrictions for eligibility. In some cases, you must be working at least 30 hours per week and for many people who are suffering from a pre-existing condition, a 30 hour work week is not a reality.
There is something else. On account of the Affordable Care Act, Texans with pre-existing conditions may be eligible to buy government health insurance. It’s called the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan and it offers low-cost coverage to people who’ve spent six months or longer excluded from the individual insurance market because of conditions like diabetes, heart disease or cancer. And while enrollment is still low, in 2014, the program will be phased out as it will be illegal for any insurance company to discriminate against the sick.
In addition, there is also the Texas Health Insurance Pool, a risk program designed to offer health insurance to thoseTexasresidents eligible for HIPPA benefits. Currently, there are five plans available, each with different deductibles and coinsurance amounts. There’s even an HSA plan for those interested. Plans are limited to charging twice the amount a healthy person would normally pay for the same coverage and they are administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas.
A pre-existing condition shouldn’t restrict you from getting the health care coverage you deserve. With guaranteed issue health care, this will not be an issue. Unfortunately, until 2014 when it becomes illegal to discriminate against the sick, Texans will have to settle for limited benefit plans or HIPPA regulated, high cost plans.
The goal is to keep you out of the unpredictable risk pool plans and find benefits from reliable, name brand companies at affordable rates, to determine this visit our Health Insurance in Texas website or contact our office today.
These days, everyone is looking for an easier, more convenient way to get things done. We used to use the drive through instead of waiting in line inside the bank, but now many of us conduct our banking online. With technology, things are easier and in most cases, a little faster. But when it comes to buying medical insurance, does it make sense to go directly to the source? In other words, can you get Texas Health insurance cheaper by calling the company directly? The answer, NO. State law requires insurance companies to charge the exact same price regardless if an agent is involved or not.
Too Many Choices, Not Enough Time
First of all, it’s unlikely you will be able to call as many providers as it would take to get comprehensive and accurate quotes for comparing rates. Yes, you can access a quote engine online for comparing insurance companies, but many of these sites do not have the most accurate, up to date rates for the companies they include. It simply does you know good to compare rates that are not reliable.
Second, calling every provider personally to get accurate rates would simply take too long. Dealing with a phone representative from each company could take hours out of your day. Remember, with each new company you would have to repeat the same information- your name, a few details about your insurance needs and other relevant information. Besides, waiting for each company to enter the information and come up with a quote would get tiring pretty quickly. By the time you received enough information to compare, you would most likely be exhausted and confused.
Rely on a Qualified Independent Agent
One of the easiest ways to get accurate quotes instantly and from a trusted source is to use a qualified, independent agent. A local representative not only knows the local Texas community, but has access to all those quotes you need to make an informed decision. In addition, some of the best providers depend on local agents to maintain insurance policies. That means if you decide to purchase, you only have to call your local agent to make changes to your policy or answer questions concerning your coverage.
Easy and Convenient…Right at Your Fingertips
Working with an independent agent is easier and more convenient that trying to navigate the confusing world of insurance providers. They have real time information, access to discounts and they are the experts. It’s the resources you need right at your fingertips. And with online access, many agents give you the option of dealing with them right from the convenience of home. Besides, they work with some of the leaders in insurance like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Cigna and others.
Don’t waste your time trying to deal directly with the insurance companies only to find out the monthly rate is the exact same as working with a broker when you can save yourself energy and may be even a few dollars by dealing with a local, professional, independent agent. When you need accurate, timely and reliable information to make an informed decision, trust the experts.

In March of 2010, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law by President Obama. The new health care law is confusing to say the least and you’re not alone if you have unanswered questions and concerns about how your health care coverage will change or whether you even need certain coverage. Many of these questions can be answered easily, while others will have to wait to see how the new law takes shape. Nevertheless, learning a little bit about some of the new policies created by the law will help you make an informed decision if and when you decide you are ready to purchaseTexashealth insurance.
The first thing you should understand about the new health care law is that many of the changes are scheduled to take place in 2014. As a result, what you may have heard about coverage options or eligibility may not be in place yet. For the consumer, this is confusing and frustrating. Nevertheless, this is how the administration chose to present heath care reform.
You Still Need Insurance
Unfortunately, many Texans are under the impression that beginning in 2014, they will not need to purchase health insurance because the government is going to provide it for free. While this may be true for some people, the majority of us will still need to purchase insurance or we will be charged a penalty.
Beginning in January 2014, Medicaid eligibility is expanding, making it more accessible to those in financial need. As the law is written, if you earn less than $14,000 for an individual and $29,000 for a family of four, you will be able to receive government assistance for health care through Medicaid.
Employer Assisted Health Insurance
Additionally, if you are under the age of 65, not enrolled in Medicare and cannot afford your employer provided plan, you may be eligible to purchase a more affordable health care plan using employer resources through a new Health Insurance Exchange. These exchanges are described as competitive marketplaces that will allow individuals and small businesses to buy qualified health benefit plans.
Purchase Health Insurance or Pay a Fee
For many Texans who do not qualify for the conditions described above, purchasing health insurance is still a requirement. In this case, by 2014, according to the new law, you must be enrolled in aTexashealth insurance plan that meets basic minimum standards. If you are not, you may be required to pay a fee. If you have a very low income or religious beliefs that make it difficult for you to purchase health insurance, you can apply for a waiver.
The best decision you can make regarding your health care is to find an affordable insurance plan now and include it as part of your budget. In less than two years, you will be required by law to purchase health care. Do yourself a favor and review some quality options from dependable insurers now while there are still options. Consider contacting Peeler Insurance and let the professionals guide you in finding the bestTexashealth insurance from well- known, credible providers. Get peace of mind in knowing that you are prepared for the future of health care and subsequently, any law that comes your way.
If you were laid off or even fired from your job, you were able to continue your employer provided health insurance temporarily through COBRA while you developed a new heath care strategy. Unfortunately, COBRA benefits come to an end, leaving you uninsured and looking for medical coverage. While there are several options to choose from, learning a little about health insurance for individuals in Texas will help you make an informed decision when and if you decide to purchase health insurance.
What is Health Insurance for Individuals?
InTexas, if you are not covered through an employer’s group plan and your COBRA benefits have run out, you are a good candidate for individual health insurance coverage. Health insurance for individuals in Texas gives folks just like you the chance to secure health care coverage for not only themselves, but also, their families when they are not insured through work. For those who are self employed, in between jobs, working part time or new graduates still looking for the perfect job, individual health insurance is a great choice.
Flexible Costs and Coverage Options
Individual health insurance gives you the greatest amount of flexibility in terms of both cost and coverage. If cost is your main concern, there are plans with very low copayments that still provide essential coverage with a large network of doctors and hospitals to choose from. There are also plans with very high deductibles which translate into low monthly premiums.
However, if you are looking to replace coverage that you had through a group plan at work, there are individual plans that closely resemble these as well. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas offers affordable health insurance for individuals inTexaswith their BlueChoice network. As long as you use a contracting BlueChoice hospital, doctor or specialist, you can save money on premiums. In addition, they have a wide selection of individual plans that closely resemble group coverage.
If you’re young and healthy and want more control over your health care costs, you can consider a Health Savings Account (HSA) where you can use pretax dollars for qualified medical expenses. With an HSA from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, you’re still covered for preventive care, medical and surgical care but you’re also gaining significant tax advantages and paying lower premiums.
Choose Only Reliable, Dependable Providers
There are several insurance providers in the state ofTexas. Simply because a provider offers individual health insurance does not guarantee that they will be reliable and deliver in your time of need. Be sure to choose only well known, credible companies that have earned a reputation for quality that you can depend on when you need it most.
Whether you are looking for high deductible plans with lower monthly premiums, plans that give you more flexibility with your health care dollars, or even temporary coverage, health insurance for individuals inTexasmay be the right solution for you. Remember, choose only dependable, reliable providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas for your insurance needs and spend less time worrying about health care and more time focusing on the things you enjoy.
Finding and securing affordable health insurance inTexasfor yourself and your family can be a bit of a challenge. The fact is, legitimate insurance is hard to find and if you’re not covered by your employer, you really have to be careful. These days, it seems like everyone with a pen is trying to sell you something and with the internet, you never really know who you’re dealing with. There’s simply no other smart choice, when you’re looking for affordable health insurance inTexas, to get reliable coverage you can depend on you simply must deal with an expert.
Trust the Expert
Regardless if you live in Dallas or Houston, finding credible, reliable health insurance can be a challenge. Like any other profession, when you’re looking for quality, you’re much better off dealing with an expert. The same is true for health insurance. InTexas, there are local insurance brokers who are licensed and ready to help you secure the lowest rates possible whether you need individual, family, small business or even self-employed insurance.
These experts represent all major health insurance companies and in many cases, are even available to service your plan. This is convenient, because if you need to change policy coverage, add benefits, decrease benefits etc., your local agent is ready to assist you. Why? Regulation resulting from the health care overhaul bill has made what used to be a relatively consistent and reliable industry unpredictable and volatile. For quite a few companies, the changing landscape of the individual health insurance market is simply not lucrative or for that matter survivable. What does this mean for you? When it comes to your financial future and your health care, it’s important to choose Texas health insurance companies that have longevity in the insurance business as well as household name recognition. Dependable insurance is there for you when you need it and is always available to serve you when you need it most.
Instability Equals Unreliability
A few years back, we saw Unicare and American National of Texas decide that they weren’t going to continue providing Texas health insurance. For many insured, this was most likely a major inconvenience as well as a financial burden as many folks were left trying to secure other, comparable health insurance. The changing world requires businesses to have not only a proven track record of success, but also the name recognition to go along with it.

While that might be true in most cases, looking for Texas health insurance can be tricky. It seems like every time you search, an overwhelming amount of websites show up on the results page. Why are there so many websites dedicated to Texas Health Insurance and how do you know how to pick the right one? Luckily, there is a way to navigate through the excess, finding exactly what you need.
Surf the Web Wisely
Currently, there is no way to regulate the information that appears on your computer from the World Wide Web. While this is positive, it can also be a burden. As is the case with most everything, all insurance websites are not created equal. There are tons of websites that claim to offer “cheap Texas health insurance” or “best Texas health insurance rates”. Many of these sites are merely trying to get your information so they can sell your name to what’s called a lead vender which simply is looking for contact information to send spam or advertisements to or worse yet, to be sold to 10 or 20 agents that will harass you for the next year. Be smart and search the web wisely. Thousands and thousands or dollars are spent by these affiliate sites to rank on page one of Google all for the purpose of harvesting your information and selling it to the highest paying lead vender. In turn the lead venders will sell the information to agents to the tune of about 10 salesman per lead.
Look For Name Recognition
So how can you make certain that you’re dealing with a legitimate medical insurance provider? Simple. Look for names that you know and trust. If you’re looking for accurate and reliable quotes, stay with household names like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas or Humana. These are reputable, well-known companies that you can trust. Avoid search engine results that do not carry recognizable names and you should be able to steer clear of the pesky affiliate sites.
Use a Legitimate, Independent Broker
There’s nothing wrong with looking around for the lowest cost plan. In fact, it makes good sense to comparison shop to make certain that you are getting exactly what you want for coverage at affordable rates. The best way to ensure that you get a quality provider at a reasonable price is to use an independent broker. In most cases, local, professional and qualified brokers have access to all of the major carriers and can usually review this information quickly and with the best results. Your Application can be Denied
Unfortunately, many people do not know that insurance providers-even major carriers-can deny your application forTexas health insurance for several reasons. If you have a pre-existing condition, providers inTexasare not required to accept your application. But is that legal? Yes, and here’s why. By law, Texas providers are not required to sell you the policy you want, meaning you can be denied flat out. They can also rate that policy up to in some cases 700%, they can also exclude a certain health condition you are receiving treatment for therefore rendering the coverage useless. Here in our state you can also qualify for a more expensive, standardized, high risk policy. So, for those of you who are choosing to stay uninsured, if down the road, you get ill, you may not be given the opportunity to buy the Texas Health Insurance policy you want when you’re ready.

The money that you save in premiums alone will be worth it in the long run.

A sluggish economy and health insurance premiums that continue to rise have prompted many people to consider the value in choosing catastrophic health insurance in Texas. With these types of plans, premiums are lower in exchange for a higher deductible, but with a Health Savings Account (HSA) qualified plan, tax advantages are common. The bottom line? Catastrophic health insurance in Texas makes sense as annual premium savings provide better value than the potential out-of-pocket expenses associated with more traditional plans.
What is Catastrophic Health Insurance?
Catastrophic health insurance in Texas is designed to handle any large medical expenses that could financially devastate an individual or family. It’s a perfect solution for those looking to save money on premiums but still retain medical coverage in an emergency. There are basically three types of catastrophic plans available- hospital only, high deductible all inclusive and high deductible with office visits. Texans are choosing high deductible all inclusive catastrophic health insurance plans with a Health Savings Account (HSA) option to get the most value out of their health care dollars.
How it Works
With most high deductible plans, you pay for all of your health care costs, up to the annual deductible amount- all except for preventive care that is included with every plan. Once you meet the deductible, some plans pay 100% of medical costs and some pay 80% leaving a 20% coinsurance. However, once you reach the out of pocket maximum, your insurance pays for it all and some even have what’s called a family deductible. While your premiums don’t count towards your deductible or out-of-pocket maximums, all catastrophic health insurance inTexasmust cover 100% of all preventive care- even before the deductible is met, that’s one of the good provisions of the new health care law.
HSA High Deductible Plans: The Best Value
Some catastrophic health insurance in Texas allows you to set up a health savings account that gives you the flexibility to use pre-tax money for medical related expenses. As a proven way to save money on medical coverage and taxes, the HSA is quickly becoming popular with Texans who are looking to get more value from their health insurance dollars.
Alternative plans may have lower deductibles, but with the typical doctor copays, you can end up spending more. Besides, monthly premiums are higher, allot higher. By switching to the one deductible plan, you are still guaranteed the negotiated rate between the doctor and the insurance company for approved charges. Besides, in a healthy year, where you don’t visit the doctor often, you’ll be glad you’re spending less money every month on your premium. Remember, preventive care is covered, even before you meet your deductible.
The tax benefits alone provide value that most people don’t want to miss. All money in the HSA account grows tax free and can be used for anything and everything medical related. Plus, you can contribute up to $3,050 yearly as an individual and $6,150 per family and that money rolls over the following year so you can watch it grow. Also to note, you are NOT required to “open” or “set-up” an HSA account to enjoy the lower premiums of these plans, it’s just an added benefit in the event you have extra cash stashed away somewhere.
The benefits of the HSA plan are prompting financially savvy people looking to save money to consider catastrophic health insurance in Texas. For the best value, the most affordable premiums and coverage that you can depend on, catastrophic health insurance in Texas just makes sense.

Choosing the right affordable health insurance in Texas can be challenging. Unlike the old days when you could find a policy, pay a small deductible and be covered, health insurance plans today are confusing. There are doctor’s visit co pays, coinsurance, deductibles and even excess charges. Who knows what you’re really getting when you pay your monthly premium. Luckily, affordable coverage is available if you eliminate co-pays and simply pay a monthly premium and a single deductible.
Co-pay Plans Can Be More Expensive
Believe it or not, co pay plans can actually end up costing you more money in the long run- in most cases, as much as 20 to 30 percent more. Here’s why. When you purchase a policy that entitles you to pay a co-pay each time you visit the doctor, you’re actually paying more than a plan that applies those charge to your deductible. In other words, every time you visit the doctor, you pay $35.00. If you have a growing family, over the course of a year, with checkups, illness and frequent visits to the doctors, you can end up spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars on co-pays. Keep in mind, you still have to meet your deductible for services not included in the co-payment and the premium for a co-pay plan is typically higher than the same plan without co-pays.
Now consider a plan where you eliminate the co-pay. You visit the doctor and pay the negotiated amount up until the deductible is met but once met you pay nothing. True, you have a higher deductible, but your premium is significantly lower. In the end, the people who purchase the plan with co-pays may end up spending 30 percent more for the same services. We have documented evidence ( our own personal claims) that by the time you pay something like a $30 co-pay there is about $30 or $40 left for the medical plan to pay. That’s not much.
Catastrophic Texas Health Insurance as a Solution
Quite a few people inTexasare starting to realize the value in choosing catastrophic health insurance as an option for saving a few hundred dollars a year. These plans eliminate the co-pay and as a result, the annual savings is significant. The deductible tends to be a bit higher but don’t forget, you save the $20 or $30 dollars each time you visit your doctor. Over a year, the savings is still more than if you had to pay a co-pay. Besides, with a lower premium, if you have a healthy year and don’t visit your doctor often, you won’t be paying the deductible and you’ll be able to keep more money in your pocket where it belongs.
HSA Qualified Plans
Another alternative to the traditional co-pay plans that Texans are taking a second look at are the high deductible Health Savings Account (HSA) qualified plans. These plans give you the flexibility to save even more money by offering low premiums with a tax-free investment feature that you can contribute to. The money grows tax free and unused funds roll over every year maximizing your savings. There are no co-pays and doctor’s visits are covered as long as you meet your deductible. Plus, unlike other plans, with an HSA there are no multiple deductibles.
Finding affordable health insurance in Texas is easy if you eliminate the co-pays. Texans are beginning to see the value in choosing catastrophic health insurance or high deductible HSA qualified plans to save more money and put their health care dollars to better use.
Examples of How This Works
Normal traditional doctor co-pay plans have something like a $30 visit co-payment. These plans also have a deductible to meet for charges outside the doctor visit like x-rays and lab test, keep in mind on all plans preventive care and charges incurred are covered 100%, no co-payment or deductible, the deductible is most often per person, per year up to 3 deductibles per family. Also most co-pay plans pay about 80/20% after the deductible.
Now, if you visit your doctor for the flu he will charge the $30 payment on his lets say $120 fee but because he is a network doctor (most are) the fee is negotiated down to $65, which leaves you paying an additional thirty five dollars for the visit.
With an affordable catastrophic health insurance plan in Texas the plan will the deductible will be per family, per year and most plans pay 100% after the deductible. You still get the preventive coverage benefit covered “first dollar”. This type of plan will price out somewhere about $200 a month cheaper for a family of 4 or 5. That’s called savings.

Before the passage of health care reform, it was possible to get a quality health insurance policy for just your children. For many struggling families, this was an option that provided relief from the rising costs of health care premiums and a way to ensure that your family was protected in the event they needed medical care. Today, everything is different and unfortunately, there are no companies that offer health insurance in Texas on just children. If you’re looking for quality health care coverage for your child, you’re simply going to have to cover yourself as well.
Leaving Insurance Companies No Choice
Who would argue that we shouldn’t do everything as a nation to protect our children medically? Health insurance for kids is simply a matter of good moral judgment and something that most responsible adults strive for. Nevertheless, provisions of the new health care bill make insuring children more difficult. It’s true that all insurance companies that offer insurance to children must approve any applicant regardless of their health and also have no pre-existing condition clauses in the policy. However, the law does not require all companies to provide health insurance to children- and that’s the problem.
What’s happened is not the insurance companies fault. In fact, they are merely responding to poor policy that made it tough for them to survive. Because of the new law, some folks were choosing not to cover their children until something tragic happened. At that point, they ran to the insurance companies for coverage who were required to insure them AND cover any and all health conditions the child may have from day one. This loophole makes running a business almost impossible and left the insurance companies with no choice but to protect themselves. As a result, health insurance in Texas for children only is no longer available and in order to insure a child, an adult must be on the plan as well.
The Good News
There is some good news to all of this. It is still possible to get a quality medical coverage in Texas for yourself and your children. In fact, with a few good choices available, it’s easy to get the coverage you need at an affordable price. Major carriers offer plans that take into consideration the needs of children and the frequency with which they need to visit the doctor. Luckily, there are several options to choose from, making finding the right plan simple and convenient.
When deciding on a company, consider those that have earned the trust and respect of Texans by providing years of quality coverage and great service. Humana Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and Cigna are companies that have worked hard to build a reputation around dependability and reliability.
Finding reliable health coverage for your child shouldn’t be so confusing. On account of changes in the law, you can no longer buy a child-only policy. However, you can still find quality coverage at an affordable rate. Consider talking to an agent and stay with household names that you know and trust. The right Texas health insurance is available; you simply need to know where to look.
Well, here we are into a new year and health insurance premiums are still on the rise. The truth is, the cost of medical care is expensive and only going to get worse. What are Texasfamilies doing to save a few dollars? Many are choosing to give high deductible health insurance plans a second look. As a way to save money on out-of-pocket-expenses to reduced premiums, more consumers are choosing high deductible plans for their health insurance in Texas needs.
Why High Deductible?
Why would someone choose a high deductible plan when they can pay less? Simple. In exchange for paying a higher deductible, premiums are much lower. In other words, you can pay less every month for the same comprehensive coverage that you would expect from a traditional doctor copay plan. The difference is that you don’t have to pay the costly copays every time you visit the doctor. Once you meet your deductible, most services are covered 100%. That means doctor’s visits, outpatient services and even emergency care with no copay. Besides, you still have preventive care benefits covered at 100% – even before the deductible is met. And if you’re healthy and don’t go to the doctor often, the reduced monthly premium will really begin to save you some money.
The Health Savings Account (HSA) as an Option
One of the most popular high deductible plans today is the Health Savings Account (HSA). These are plans that give you the most flexibility in terms of how you’re health care dollars are being spent. It works like this- after purchasing a qualified high deductible health insurance plan, you are eligible to open a separate medical IRA savings account. The benefits of this account are tremendous, giving you the opportunity to save tax free money that rolls over year after year. The money you contribute can be used for anything medically related and will continue to grow tax free as long as you carry your high deductible plan. As an opportunity to get the most value out of your health care dollar, the HSA is a great investment. Also note there is no requirement to open the savings account portion of the concept, the plan would then just be a traditional catastrophic medical plan.

With the same great services that you’ve come to trust, you can save money and rest assured that your health insurance needs are covered. HSA plans may be new to the insurance world, but the dependable, reliable coverage from the companies you know and trust is exactly the same.

A couple of years ago in March of 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – the federal health care reform law. InTexas, if you have health insurance, you and your family may be eligible to receive some pretty important preventive care benefits- at no cost to you.
The Act requires all Texasinsurance companies to provide additional benefits to most policy holders, regardless if the deductible has been met. Part of the new law requires that these “preventive services” are covered 100%, making it easier and more convenient for you to receive the care you need regardless of whether or not you’ve met your deductible.
What This Means For You
If you have a Texas health insurance plan beginning on or afterSeptember 23, 2010, your policy must cover certain preventive services without you having to pay coinsurance, a copay or meeting a deductible. For adults, this includes a variety of screenings like Type 2 Diabetes or cancer screenings, Blood Pressure and cholesterol tests, counseling on losing weight or quitting smoking and various immunizations -meaning you won’t have to pay for a flu shot.
In addition, there are more specific services available for women including various female cancer screenings for things like cervical cancer, mammography, osteoporosis testing, gestational diabetes etc. Children can receive well checks until age 21, autism screenings, behavioral assessments, various other screenings, immunizations and even iron supplements.
As with everything, there are some exceptions that you should be aware of. The preventive services provision in the health care bill applies only to folks who have individual health insurance or group health insurance created afterMarch 23, 2010with a new policy year starting afterSeptember 23, 2010. Unfortunately, if your plan is “grandfathered” then you may not receive these benefits.
Additionally, if your plan uses a network, be aware that preventive services are only required to be made available through an in-network provider. Take this into consideration when choosing your insurance company and be sure to look for a company that offers you enough choices. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, for instance, has the largest network in the state ofTexas. With BCBS of Texas, you can rest assured that you will find the in-network doctor you need to provide your preventive services.
While the price of medical care continues to increase, for most of us, there is some relief with the preventive services provision in the health care reform law. As long as you have Texas health insurance that began after 2010, you must be offered these services for free without a co-pay, coinsurance or having met your deductible. Check with your provider to make certain you are receiving the benefits you deserve. If you don’t have insurance yet, consider Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas for giving you the best selection of in-network providers.

Self-employed individuals also benefit from a high deductible plan, particularly since a group plan offered through an employer is not an option. Additionally, folks with lower incomes who are looking for a safety net but can’t afford costly premiums might benefit from catastrophic health insurance.
